Case Study

RNLI

For two decades, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) College has served as the premier training hub for the charity’s dedicated lifesavers, nestled in the heart of Poole. This multifaceted facility not only functions as a training centre but also doubles as a hotel and houses the RNLI’s All-weather Lifeboat Centre, where the construction of their Shannon class lifeboat takes place.

The establishment of this centre has revolutionised the lifeboat building process for the RNLI, consolidating every stage under one roof. From design to manufacturing, maintenance, and repair, the purpose-built facility is equipped to handle all aspects of lifeboat production. In addition to crafting Shannon lifeboats, the centre is responsible for servicing and repairing in-service all-weather lifeboats from across the UK and Ireland.

By assuming control over the entire lifeboat fleet lifecycle – from inception to maintenance and repair – the RNLI ensures a swift response to any operational challenges, minimising downtime and maximising lifesaving capabilities. As the RNLI commemorates 200 years of lifesaving in 2024, the significance of this facility in Poole cannot be overstated. It serves as a cornerstone in the charity’s mission to safeguard lives at sea, guaranteeing continued effectiveness and resilience in their lifesaving efforts for years to come.
